Open weights vs hosted API: what is the difference?
Open weights and hosted APIAn open-weights System One model publishes its checkpoint for anyone to download and run; a hosted-API model is available only as a paid endpoint from its maker. Some models are both.
Open weights mean no per-call cost, offline use, and fine-tuning on your own data, within the licence. A hosted API means no infrastructure to run and, usually, a larger model. The registry records which each model is, with the provider and the price per million tokens for hosted ones.
